Ant Problems

When people ring the office about ants it’s normally ants in the kitchen, here they have access to food, water and heat, all the things a growing ant needs. Ants are attracted by sweet and sticky food (Soft Drinks, Jam, etc) anything with sugar. If you have Ants or don’t want to attract them you should clear away food and liquid spillages when they happen. Make sure bins are sealed, pull out things like the fridge, washing machine and clean any food debris from under the appliances.

 Don’t make life easy for them, have a look around the outside of your home looking for cracks and crevices were Ants could gain access.

Wasps

The queen wasps start brand new nests every spring and enter buildings in their search for a dry, dark site.  They can also build nest in your garden, sheds and holes in the ground are a normal place to find them. Not much can be done to prevent a wasps nesting in your home, you need to keep an eye for wasp activity, as the summer goes on you will see wasps coming and going from the nest.

 If you try and deal with the nest yourself they can become very aggressive, it really is best to leave it to the professionals.

Our first wasp nest of 2011

We carried out a treatment for our first wasp nest of 2011 today, Never before have we done a treatment for wasps so early in the year. The normal area’s you will find the nests will be holes in the ground, Vents, Attics. You will see a lot of activity with wasps coming and going.

Our bedbug dogs are saving Hotel’s and B&B’s money

More and more Hotels, B&B’s, Hostels are using our bedbugs dog services. By using the dogs we can find a single bedbug in a room. This means we can stop the problem before it gets out of control. The dogs can check up to 10 rooms an hour compared to 30 to 45 minutes per room for a technician.

If a Hotel or B&B gets bedbugs it does not mean it’s a dirty or not a well maintained hotel, unfortunately every time a room is rented out the run the risk of someone bring the bedbugs into the room.

Rats in my Attic

A lot of calls this week about rats in attics. Rats are great climbers, they can access your attic very easily. Once there they have a lovely big area with lots of installation that they can use for building a nest. If you live in a semi detached or a terrace house the rats may have gain access from your neighbours house and has come from their attic. You should talk to your neighbours about your problem as they might be having the same problem. I have a rodent in my house, Help !

The first thing is not to panic, some people can deal with the problem.  If you are one of these people, here are a few tips.

  • Common area’s to check
    • Hotpress
    • Behind the fridge in the kitchen
    • Behind the kickboards in the kitchen
    • Attic
  • Like all living things, rodents need food. Don’t make it easy for them, remove all food from counter tops (Bread, Fruit in bowl, etc). remove food from the lower presses in your kitchen and put the food in the wall mounted presses.
  • Cat/Dog food: Don’t leave you pet food in the bowl when your pet is not feeding, again this is just another source of food that rodents will eat.

Bedbugs are becoming a real problem

Everyone has been talking about the bedbug problem in New York and how bad the problem is. Now the bedbug problem is in Canadian cities also, the problem is so bad that it’s become a national emergency. We have also noted a huge increase in the amount of call from people in Dublin worried about bedbugs. They are not sure if they have a problem and want their homes checked, as a result our two bedbug dogs are really busy.

 I still get a kick out of watching the dogs working with their handler, it really is amazing that they can find these small bedbugs with their nose.
