Flying ants can turn up suddenly in warm weather, often in large numbers. They are winged ants leaving a mature colony to mate and start new colonies.

Outdoors, this can be a short seasonal event. Inside a property, however, it may point to a nearby nest, an entry point, or ongoing ant activity that needs closer attention.

What Are Flying Ants?

These insects are not a separate species. They are reproductive ants that develop wings as part of the colony life cycle.

In Ireland, they are often linked with black garden ants, which are common during the warmer months. Around gardens and homes, they may be seen near patios, walls, windows, paving and outdoor seating areas.

Warm, humid and calm weather often brings them out. That is why a swarm can seem to arrive suddenly, sometimes around the same time each year.

Why Flying Ants Appear Suddenly

Several mature colonies can release winged ants at the same time. When the weather conditions are right, large numbers may be seen within a short period.

Garden swarms are often part of normal seasonal behaviour and may pass quickly. Around a home or business, the location matters more than the swarm itself.

A brief swarm outside is usually less concerning than flying ants turning up indoors, returning to the same room, or gathering near windows, floors, walls or food areas.

Flying Ants Indoors

Indoor sightings should be checked more carefully, especially if there are already signs of ants in the house.

Vacuuming visible ants may help in the short term, but it does not deal with the source. If they are coming from a nest nearby, more may follow.

Repeated sightings in one room, beside the same window, or close to a wall or floor edge can suggest a nest nearby or a gap being used as an entry point.

Flying Ants in the Garden

Garden flying ants are common during warm weather and often come from mature outdoor colonies.

If they stay outside and do not affect the property, treatment may not be needed. In many cases, the swarm passes on its own.

Problems are more likely when they gather near doors, patios, outdoor seating areas, customer spaces or places where food is being served.

What You Can Do First

Close windows and doors if flying ants are entering the property. Then check obvious gaps around doors, windows, vents, pipework, wall edges and floor areas.

Inside, visible ants can be removed with a vacuum, and any trails can be cleaned with warm soapy water. This may help reduce activity in the short term.

Large amounts of spray should be avoided unless you know where the ants are coming from. Sprays may only deal with the ants you can see and may not reach the colony.

When to Call Pest Control

You may need professional ant pest control if flying ants are found indoors, keep returning, are linked with ongoing ant trails or affect a business property.

Advice is also worthwhile if they are close to food areas, staff spaces, customer areas, windows, wall gaps or the same part of the building each time.
